Rapid Otter Movement (ROM) is an innovative learning method designed by Senior Coach Andrew to deliver fast, effective, and enjoyable swimming progress for learners of all ages, focusing on the best modern swimming learning techniques.
Frustrated by slow, outdated swimming instruction methods, Coach Andrew identified key flaws in commonly-used approaches. Many coaches relied on one-on-one teaching in large classes, leaving students idle on the poolside for long periods. Overuse of flotation aids created a false sense of progress, leaving children unprepared to swim without them. Repetitive and disconnected drills often wasted time and failed to teach proper stroke techniques.
While teaching at Singapore’s primary schools, Andrew observed a concerning number of children unable to swim, exacerbated by disruptions like COVID-19 and increasing parental work demands. Determined to address these challenges, he developed ROM after thousands of hours coaching diverse students, creating a method that works for both large and small classes across all age groups, ensuring the best swimming learning experience for all.
ROM simplifies swimming into clear, manageable components. Students first master breath control, buoyancy, and leg action—foundational skills that build confidence. Arm movement and stroke coordination follow naturally, ensuring a smooth learning curve. Unlike traditional methods, ROM prioritizes active in-water practice, allowing students to explore and feel the water in a safe, supervised environment. While classes may appear lively, this hands-on approach accelerates skill development and fosters a deeper connection with swimming.
Progress is often visible in a few months, with students grasping essentials quickly under Andrew’s expert guidance. Flotation aids are used sparingly—only for very young children unable to stand in the pool. This ensures students build genuine strength and buoyancy from the start. In the early stages, only swim boards are used to isolate leg movements and let the child breathe above water.
Fun is a cornerstone of ROM. Andrew believes water is inherently enjoyable, and lessons are designed to spark joy while teaching vital skills. Each session ends with engaging games tied to practical abilities like lifesaving or underwater swimming, keeping children excited to return.
With consistent lessons, most students master freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke within two years, along with critical skills like diving, swimming underwater, and water safety. These prepare them not only for Singapore’s mandatory SwimSafer program but also for a lifelong love of swimming.
